O.P. Huh?  Data Recovery
Right, OK so I mistakenly formatted my harddisk while installing Linux.. Got windows back in and everything, and used a program called VirtualLab to scan old partitions.. and I found all my data but of course the only way to save the data is to pay (a lot) of money..

Any suggestions for a free one? We're talking a years worth of Uni work, plus loads of pictures (in all fairness the rest I could get back.. music is on ipod, programs/installers are available on net)

thank you! i know the files are there as can see all the file/folder structure through that program on one of the old partitions.. just other programs couldnt :s the 'PC inspector file recover' was my first port of call but all that did was give me clusters that were unreadable, like cluster xxxx.doc, xls etc etc

if you want to do it from Linux, click
was put impeccably into words at DebianDay for me last Saturday, by Knut Yrvin of Trolltech - adults try something once, fail, and then are like "ffs this doesn't work". Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.

thanks for the help but sadly that freeware program is merely for deleted data, not data lost through formatting or corrupt partitions :(

RE: Data Recovery
Stellar Phoenix Windows data recovery software will help you in recovering your lost data from formated hard drive.
Although its not free but it also to download the free demo version from:http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm
Through demo you would be able to see the recovered data.
