O.P. Network Connections screwed up - need to format?
right, ethernet to router doesnt work
pci wifi to router doesnt work
usb wifi to router doesnt work

ethernet completely oblivious to the router,
pci crashes windows when you try and set up a wifi conenction
usb connects to router, but comes up with stupid ip address... if you set the ip and everything it pings the router but has no connection

what the hell! i'm thinking of formatting it, does anyone have any suggestions before i do? thanks

reset your router, replace the RJ45 cable, check for 169.x.x.x ip adress, perform a release/renew, there's a lot of more things that you can do now...

Laptop or desktop?
If it is a desktop is it an onboard NIC or is it PCI? If it is PCI change the PCI port it is connected to.

Other then that try logging in as a different user.

Try using this command on the command prompt. It should fix the problem.

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

If that doesnt work, reset the router, and retry.

Last resource IMO, format the computer

reseting the router doesn't help...

the ip address it makes when set to automatic is 169. something tony knew about 169, what does that mean?

thanks

That IP will come up whenever the operating system detects a network and there is no dhcp server detected, which means, there is no device or network providing IP addresses, so the OS will use a default one (169.x.x.x). Sometimes it work.

In this case, the DHCP server would be the router.
