RE: USB Never Will Work Again...
then rele your stuffed!
there may be a fuse blown on your usb as its 5v dc its fused and if thats dead its not supplying power to a device and the pc knows there is something plugged in but its not got power so it comes up unrecognised.

test with a usb light or plug something in that has a power light and see if it comes on. that will help you know if the fuse is blown

the other thing that might of happened is one of the usb ports connection have been dis conected becuase of weak soldering.

If you brought it pritty soon doesnt it have a years manufactures warantee so you should be able to get it fixed under warantee.
give em a ring and see if there is any re-calls on your device and if they will fix it under warantee

Unless you bought your laptop from a crappy manufacturer, if you purchased it in April 2007 your complimentary one-year warranty is until April 2008.  Simply contact them for their nearest repair or service center and have it shipped out/fixed.

Well yea obviously, but is there any other solution because:

a) I dont have a backup of anything on my laptop right now because my desktop is in Canada...
b) Acer Hong Kong probably has Chinese Customer Service...and my Chinese aint that great...
c) Paying long distance to Canada isn't an option.

My USB mouse light turns on, then dims (which means 'no activity'), then shuts off when the USB Not Recognized bubble pops up.

Wait, that sounds like software then. Seeing as how it gets power, and then switches off as soon as windows decides it isn't recognized.

Have you tried reinstalling the software for the mouse(if any) and reinstalling the drivers for the mouse/usb port?  Or, if worst comes to worst, formatting.

Doesn't resolve. I reformatted after the 1st port failed, but still remained to be a problem.

Usually would be in the driver disk you get with a new mobo. tried google-ing your mobo model/manufactor driver?

Yes as many people have said this is a hardware problem. If the usb port isn't connected correctly to the mobo then of course its not going to read anything. It will still power the device but yeah.

Don't let the computer shop charge you too much. If its what I think it is then it should only take > 5 minutes to fix.
