when you hibernate your computer DOES shut down. it makes an exact copy of the system's state and restores it when the computer is turned back on. in fact, you could unplug a desktop computer that's been hibernated, leave it unplugged for monthes, go on vacation, plug it back in across the world and it'd still restore your state. sleep, however, leaves the computer on -- but it cuts power to the processor and extension cards.
