I have been using MSN 7.5 forever now.
I was never interested in Live, mainly because it wouldn't let me rename my contacts the way I want to.

But now it forced me to upgrade my MSN.

SO.

Is it possible to rename contacts using colours and bold text and such?

It is practically a necessity for me.

Yes it is... Renaming contacts was removed from Plus! but it is now a feature in WLM itself. Right click on a contact and press "Add a nickname" or "Edit nickname". You can use Plus! formatting codes in the nicknames.
