Shoutbox

I'm trying and failing to download any version of MSN messenger.  It looks as if its doing it on the taskbar, chugs away for a minute then a white screen with a tiny little box up in the top left hand corner appears with "done" in the taskbar.  I've got windows 98.  Can't see it anywhere, please help?
