O.P. Vista gone weird
Well recently after i installed Vista SP1, this message has been coming up on my desktop.

EDIT: It now says that windows is activated in control panel>System, but i sitll get the message on desktop
I have modified the following files, so can someone upload me the originals

Windows\System32\authui.dll
Windows\System32\browseui.dll
Windows\System32\ieframe.dll
Windows\System32\imageres.dll
Windows\System32\oobefldr.dll
Windows\System32\wmploc.dll
Windows\Branding\Basebrd\Basebrd.dll
Windows\Branding\Shellbrd\Shellbrd.dll

It never used to show that message on desktop with vista, but maybe SP1 is causing it as i dont see why modifying these files would cause it.

Don't download the files from there though, since they are for an old version.
Use ResHack to make your own.
YouTube closed-captions ripper (also allows you to download videos!)

Since Windows Vista SP1 is BETA, not Final, that message gets displayed.  Although Windows is Activated, you will be forced to Uninstall SP1 Beta at a future date to continue running Windows, although I think the expiration date is in like, June or July 2008, at which point in time SP1 Final will be released.

I get that aswell Jimbo and I am using the release candidate version of SP1 it can be annoying but I wouldn't worry about it too much

Like people say its a reminder that you have it and just incase they release a new version with a different build number so that you know what build you have easily i guess

That's why you shouldn't install Beta service packs on your normal system, leave it to the beta testers to do it, cause it could also screw your installation beyond repair.

It's a public beta, there's no harm in using it.  He was just quering whether the "Evaluation Copy" text on the desktop was normal behaviour.

If people never used public betas then most programmes would be horribly buggy on release as a tester base of millions just using software normally can do far more than a testing base of a few programmers under abornormal conditions.

And i very much doubt that what is essentially just a pack of fixes can screw up your installation :P

True, because during the beta testing stage, many bugs and errors in the software are found and fixed for the final release. And is it exactly that which leads to using beta software being more harmful than using only released software (that is no longer in beta stage). Which contradicts your statement that there is no harm in using it. The odds of something going (terribly) wrong are larger when using beta software. Of course, they are still very small, but larger nonetheless.

I can remember one particular normal release of Messenger Plus! that could render your Windows 98 installation useless, not starting anymore after a reboot. And that was not even a beta release. Using software always brings risks, using beta software increases those risks.
