O.P. Messenger Auto-start when windows starts
I've unchecked the box in preferences so that MSN Messenger DOESN'T open when Windows starts up.

But it does.

Every time!

I'm running Messenger 2008 (build 8.5. 1302. 1018)
Vista Home Premium / SP1

Is there a known issue with Messenger? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Help!

Try using AutoRuns :)

Thanks Mike - excellent utility and no sign of MSN Messenger when it ran. So I shut down and restarted and guess what? Yup, Messenger started right up again! So the required box is cleared (i.e. it shouldn't start at start-up), it's not showing in the utility - so what the **** is going on?!

Totally confused now!

Hmmm ... that's weird...
Can you post a list of your startup programs?
Something else could be using WLM's API thus, making WLM to start.

RE: Messenger Auto-start when windows starts
I just signed up specifically to find a fix to this as mine is doing the same thing and it is new. I have unchecked the box to start WLM when I log on windows. Under general tab of options it says right below that open windows live messenger main window when windows live messenger starts but its greyed out so I can not uncheck that box..
I'm also running Messenger 2008 (build 8.5. 1302. 1018) on
Windows XP PRO sp3

Apologies if I should start my own thread, and if no replies I will but it sounded like my identical problem.

Edited to say with autorun proggie I found WLM's API so will see if that stops it from autostarting...

I just found the solution I think. I had installed Hiyo and think that was when it started auto opening, seems Hiyo was in my autostarts. I unchecked it and tonight, messenger did not start on boot and my entire boot up went faster. Will also post on the thread I started as had not gotten an answer on this thread, Did not intend to hijack it.
