O.P. VX-6000 Compatibility with other webcams and software
I got a Windows LifeCam VX-6000.  Looking over the documentation I see that you have to install Windows Live Messenger.  Can this device only communicate with users that also have Windows Live Messenger and a Microsoft Webcam?  Can you use it with SKYPE and with users who have other makes of Webcams?  Is Windows Live Messenger the same as plain Windows Messenger and will use up a lot of resources on my computer - CPU and memory?
Although I am an experts in most computer matters, I haven't used webcams much and I don't have a high confidence level in my use of them.
Thanks,
Al

Ok.. well reading reviews on this webcam, it is very good. You can use this for Windows Live Messenger and other programs, like Skype. Any program that asks for a webcam, you will be able to select the VX-6000 as your webcam.

Here's a note: If you have Vista, when you plug the webcam in, don't install the drivers from the CD. Let Vista search for them on the internet (Y). If on XP, use the CD.

If using it in Windows Live Messenger, your contact does not require a webcam to see YOU on webcam. What webcam they have doesn't affect you. They just need Windows Live Messenger to see you on cam of course, or what ever program (Skype, etc).

As for WLM using up CPU and memory, it can differ. It depends on your computer specs, how many programs you are running at the same time, etc. Millions of people use it, so you should be fine using it too.

You'll be fine with your webcam, it's a very good one. Be confident. :P (Y)

the vx-6000 has nothing to do with WLM. it's the exact same as every other webcam on the market.

ON the contrast. I've had 2 of these now and both have gone wrong. The microphone part to be precise It'll just go to 100% gain/feedback thus it'll only seem to pick up white noise.

The actual camera is good I guess, except for lack of 'control' over exposure which is a reason why I haven't made any animations with this camera.

The webcam will work with all/many/most applications capable of receiving a/v from webcams

But I suppose you could use it with a mic and headphones and the sound quality might be better that way anyway.
