my friends computer has got this Vundo trojan thing, along with other rubbish and i have no idea how to get rid of it...
McAfee shows a warning every 10 seconds saying its infected, it can't sort it out though... theres a symantec removal tool, that just said that it couldn't find it on the machine... wtf?!

anyone got any tips when dealing with infected system files?

The Ultimate Boot CD has some useful AV utilities it might fix the problem. (a 200mb+ download though, the thing actually just builds on BartPE with a bunch of extras...)

0.1% chance it well break the computer, just triple check you're not removing any system files with the virus scan. & if you are you'll need to replace them anyway otherwise it's still infected

Well that's actually happened to me once, norton said csrss.exe was infected. I had no idea what that was at the time, couldn't delete it - it was some sort of important system file (that might also explain why it says the user was SYSTEM in task manager) so yeah had to do a reformat.

But if you're ever worried you'll stuff up their computer (which I did), you should always carry around your tools just in case something goes really really wrong! (which I didn't).

Stuff like recovery disks, the vista installation disk is useful if you have that (for using its recovery features; not installing vista - we're trying to FIX problems :P) An external hard drive would also be useful to create an entire backup of their system just in case something goes really really wrong during your fixings (I like Norton Save and Restore 2 to make backups but that really slows down the system). And yeah just general other stuff which could fix a problem. But usually the ubcd4win can fix MOST problems you might have if something goes wrong *coughyoustuffeditup* when you fix their computer. Otherwise, bring along your Windows XP installation disk (if they're using XP) so you can reinstall windows ( (which I did to avoid them losing all their stuff.) while you apologize for losing all their stuff to them. Ironically that caused them to lose all their stuff. Obviously that person never asked me to fix their computer again. (A)
