O.P. "Compatible" Version (Win98/MSN7.0) problem

My main PC bit the dust several months back and I've yet to get it into a shop mainly because lack of time and/or lack of funds. Thus, I'm stuck on one of my older machines which has the awful Win98(SE).

I had MSN7.0 & Messenger Plus! installed some time ago but ended up removing Messenger Plus! for some reason. (can't remember my thought process on that now, ha) However, in an attempt to reinstall Plus!, I've hit a brick wall.

I have downloaded the Messenger Plus! 3.63.148 installer multiple times, but the installer will NEVER run properly. It always presents a message telling me the installer expects a newer version of Windows even though the Download Page clearly states Win98 is good.

I'm running on Windows version 4.10.222 A with MSN version 7.0.0820. Anyone have any ideas?

Note that suggestions like "Install a version of windows from this millennium!" won't be very helpful. Forgive if this is posted in the wrong section as well.

I honestly doubt it. Given Microsoft has stopped support for Win98, I'm not sure if updates would still be accessible somehow either.

However, I'm not aware of anything that's changed since the last time I successfully had Messenger Plus! (3) installed. (No new updates, no uninstalled updates and the like)

I have a PC set at home for some other computer fixings and it has a Windows 98 SE installed, and Messenger 7. It's a fresh install, everything just done in a fully formated hard drive.
It is fully updated with all the possible patches and hotfixes from windows update website. So, no solution at all for this problem?
It's a shame to find out that such a handy software it's not as compatible as the website says. If there is a fixing for this problem I would be happy to carry on using messenger plus. Cheers!

I, too, am having this problem. Brand new clean install on a Toshiba Tecra 4010CDT laptop with 160 MB RAM. 98SE plus the unofficial service pack 2.1a, IE 6.0, Messenger 7.0.

I actually receive 2 error messages, one after the other:

"The C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\MSGPLUS3-SETUP.EXE file expects a newer version of Windows.
Upgrade your Windows version."

"C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\MsgPlus3-Setup.exe

A device attached to the system is not functioning."

Attachment shows these 2 error messages, plus version info.
