O.P. Water in laptop
Today my mum spilt water over her work laptop, and she said that it "clicked off, she then tried to wipe up the water, tried to turn it on, it clicked a few times and then wouldnt turn on again"

Since she got it home I took the keyboard out and used a hair drier to try and dry the inside of the laptop, and now the computer turns on and seems fine.

What I want to know is, is there some kind of diagnostic test I can run on the laptop to check that all the parts are ok, or should it just be fine anyway?  I know it should be fine but seeing as this is my mum's work laptop, which she can't really do without, I just want to make sure that everythings ok.  The operating system in windows xp home

It's a shame that I can't remember the site or even find my CD of it but I find that, from what I remember, the Ultimate Boot CD works extremely well and has RAM and Hard Drive tests and Diagnostics on it.

Would be a good idea as you can check if any of the parts are faulty in specific areas.

Ok i'm downloading a copy of it atm, and im trying to look through the site to find the appropriate tests for what I want but im getting very confused.  Can someone just tell me the tests that I would need to run just to check that everything is working fine?

Cheers

I doubt there is a program which can check what you actually need to check.

You should check internal electronics, not if a HDD has bad sectors, your graphics card can show every resolution, or your RAM can still read/write.

For checking internal electronics for shortcuts and other damages you need to completely open up the laptop and pull out your multimeter (and of course an extreme good knowledge of hitech electronics).... In short: we can't do it ourselfs....

Of course, doing the basic tests can't hurt and would show if there is some severe damage done or not. But a proper test, to find the small broken stuff, can not be done by software (at least not with software you'll find on the net). A diagnostics centre will probably have some hardware stuff running very specialized software; compare it with a repair shop for your modern car with all their electronics they hook up to check your motor and all...

Yeah I though that would have to be the case if I wanted to check everything properly.  In that case I reckon I may just leave it for now, as I don't have any of the equipment to do that (both the multimeter and the knowledge :P)

The laptop seems to be working fine for the moment anyway, and I've done the basic tests and they all came out fine, so it seems like I've been lucky this time.

Thanks for all the help guys
