what command line audio encoder do you recommend?

O.P. what command line audio encoder do you recommend?
ffmpeg can re-encode audio to various different formats but I haven't been able to find a way to enable vbr (it uses libmp3lame, so it should be possible but I haven't found a way).

what other command line tool do you know of that supports vbr and doesn't suck?

EDIT: But I think it only encodes to mp3

I thought of that but I wanted aac and others too. it does encode nicely to vbr (with a histogram showing what bitrate each frame is) so I guess that'll do. who uses anything other than mp3 these days anyway? (don't kill me, I'm just kidding)
