O.P. Windows Live Messenger Auto-starts when windows starts
I've unchecked the box in preferences so that MSN Messenger DOESN'T open when Windows starts up.

But it does.

Every time!
On my desktop, as well as on others desktops as this is a shared computer.
The other main user does not use messenger at all and I am trying to disable the main window on boot.

on general tab under options its checked to "Open windows live messenger main window when Windows Live Messenger starts", which is fine. (thats greyed out also.)

Unchecked is the box to automatically run the program when I log on to windows.

I'm running Live Messenger 2008 (build 8.5. 1302. 1018)
Windows XP Pro
Is there a known issue with Messenger?
I posted I was having the same issue on an earlier post, but no one answered it. Can someone help with this?

OK this is probably not the best way to do it, but it should work:

It should be noted that making a wrong move may cause problems, however, there should be very little that can go wrong if you follow this correctly.

1) Go Start and then run

2) type in "msconfig" (without quotes) and then click OK

3) Choose the startup tab

4) Now look for "msnmsgr.exe" and remove the tick

5) Click on OK and restart the computer

6) Now windows Live Messenger should not appear anymore.

Hope this helps

I just found the solution I think. I had installed Hiyo and think that was when it started auto opening, seems Hiyo was in my autostarts. I unchecked it and tonight, messenger did not start on boot and my entire boot up went faster.  Whew, so anyone with same issue, check that other componants of live messenger are not set to start on boot.
I found and disabled Hiyo from autostart with the program Startupcop.

An emoticons type of addon, much like Smiley Central and SweetIM: http://www.hiyo.com/

They claim to be adware/spyware free, but haven't tried it myself.
Finish the problem
