Indeed.

When comparing the same screens of the same Messenger version on different Windows OSes there are very little differences:

Windows Live Messenger 2009 (14.0.8050.1202) on Windows XP:

Windows Live Messenger 2009 (14.0.8050.1202) on Windows Vista without Aero:

Windows Live Messenger 2009 (14.0.8050.1202) on Windows Vista with Aero enabled:

The biggest difference is when Aero is enabled on Vista. XP simply doesn't have Aero, it's not possible to show this effect on XP, not even with skins. Another tiny difference: The close/maximize/minimize buttons on XP only show colors when you mouseover, not sure why.

If you don't like it, you have to disable Aero. If you don't want to globally disable it, I think mynetx has a program to turn it off just for messenger
If you're on Vista and you don't like Aero on your Messenger windows while you do want it on your other native Windows you can indeed use mynetx's Aero Switcher tool.
Finish the problem

Or just add a registry key ;>

Which is what mynetx's thing does :p
