Is there any way to change the message window background?...I can't find any way to...

Or even better...is there any way to downgrade messenger versions?  I absoulutely hate the new 2009 version

You will have to change the default scene of the main contact list for the conversation windows to be changed to that colour. The default scene can be changed by hovering with your mouse on your nickname and then clicking the icon shown in the following image:





If you still want to downgrade to some other version, you can run ZapMessenger to remove Windows Live Messenger completely and then downgrade to whatever version you fancy.
