O.P. Windows Live Essentials not installing
Have tried everything so far related to all of the most recent releases(Windows Live Messenger 8.1 and Windows Plus Live 4.81).

Uninstalled all MSN software, deleted all left behind folders, and used the ZapMessenger utility.

When I install "Plain Jane" Messenger, then WLM, and MsgPlus 3, I can get it to work without adding skins(Because they are all for Windows Live 2009 and 8.5/8.1. So when I try to install a skin, it says it is not compatible with my current WLM installation.

At this point, I get the Alert that there is a more recent version available, and I go ahead and download it. It turns out to be the Windows Live Essentials. I download it and run the exe. It starts installing after following the steps in the first few windows. I watch the progress bar climb all the way to 100%, then all of a sudden, it starts rolling back and uninstalling it. When it's finished, everything has failed to install and has a red X next to each item in the list. The message in the right window says that the installation was canceled with a cancelation # 0x80004004.

Now what really confuses me, is that a few days ago, I updated WLM to WPLM 4.81 and it worked. I imported Snow Leopard and was all happy until the next time I opened WPLM. It was back to just "Plain Jane" again, and that's when all this stuff began to happen.

Thank you in advance

Try to install it with WindowBlinds disabled =) (Or was that case about something else?)

Both posts above are for the same problem.

I use Tune-up Utilities (not Windowblinds) for my desktop skins. I'll try setting the current theme back to default and see if that works.

No dice.

I reset all themes to default, and reinstalled Messenger 8.1 and Plus! Live 4.81. Then let Messenger run the Essentials update. Again, it began installing everything until it reached 100% and then rolled back and aborted setup.

I'm clueless :(

I think I may know what the problem is, but don't know how to resolve it.

I decided once again to remove all messenger installs and start from scratch. I can remove everything except the Windows Live Photo Gallery. I've tried Add/Remove Programs, but it fails to uninstall. I also tried using the Search in the Start Menu to find where it is, and the search came up empty. All this may have been caused by a system restore I did a few months back that deleted a lot of programs that it probably shouldn't have.

Here is the error I encounter :

"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

Ok, I can officially say this problem has been solved. The Windows Installer Clean Up Tool did the trick, it was as I suspected, the stupid Photo Gallery thing needed to be removed from Add/Remove Programs.

I'll say this one more time now that it's complete, THANK YOU Naruteitor.
