It's not really about space, it's more this window on the left being absolutely useless;

And I'm just used to having it in the system tray, it's just convenient I suppose. My system tray is not cluttered, I'm running 1680x1050.

Because I don't need Messenger there, thus moving it to the tray again.
It's a personal taste: I like to always know what a window is without getting my hands off the keyboard. Even iTunes can be minimized to tray, why can't Microsoft make the same?

Care to buy me a new monitor? Frankly, I agree with Tomo-L here. It wouldn't bother me so much if I didn't have to see the damned thing twice. Why are there two icons on the taskbar when there could easily just be one? It's pointless.

Besides, I'm running it in compatibility mode and I don't experience any of the above mentioned problems.

I agree about the window on the left, but it's being removed in WLM 2010 anyway.  Isn't it just to show which user is signed in in cases of polygamy, like so that you know which window relates to which user?

Well that would make sense, if polygamy was a standard feature of WLM. Why would they implement something to support a feature that you can only use with an addon? Doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah, I had thought that, but I know they do recognise the work of Messenger Plus! Live (there was an article on it a while ago), so it is possible

Near enough everyone can, it's just a small few by the looks of it. Not quite sure what causes it. Annoying, really!

The double window is/was* a kind of 'bug'; aka a not wanted side effect. It was not a start of a new feature (like polygamy) or something though.

*as such one of the first things they fixed in WLM 2010

I very strongly agree with having an option to put WLM back into the system tray though. It isn't just about space or cluttered the system tray (my system tray contains no other stuff than the clock and the lan connection icon for example), but there is a very strong case to make that IM programs like mIRC, WLM, etc are many times used as kind of "background processes" and therefore have a perfect place in the system tray when used in that way. Double clicking them (to get them from "background process" status to "normal usage program" status) and you'll have the taskbar button, just as it is in XP. Perfect synergy if you ask me.

When I'm working with lots of different programs I don't need a WLM button smack in the middle of the rest on my taskbar because it is exactly _that_ what I call cluttering, wasting space and diverting attention to what is important; having an icon in the system tray is not...

And as a counter agrument for the 'many people have bigger resolutions now': netbooks are getting more and more popular and they have far smaller resolutions than most average screen resolutions. Not to mention that, again, working with a lot of programs together will use up any space, no matter how large your resolution is.
