Actually, in some cases it is. Tried on a VM and it wasn't checked. Tried on my netbook and it was checked. Not sure how it works, both machines are Windows 7 with Live Messenger 2009 installed.

I'm guessing that's because you're not an administrator on your computer and automatic updates are enabled. If so, you should ask an administrator to hide the update.

I'm not sure about it. Yesterday I was talking with a contact that installed WLM 2011 (received through Windows Update!) but I continued to see her with her usual display name coloured with Plus.

Sometimes, when I use WLM 2011 in my VM or when I sign in on the Web Messenger (that behaves like 2011), when I go back to WLM 2009 I find my first name (not the full one) as display name, but this doesn't happen all the times.

Many times I keep my home PC signed in with WLM 2009 and sign in on the web, or from WLM 2011 on my VM, in these cases I think that my contacts that use 2009 see me with my 2009 display name, as I have myself as a contact and see my display name.

However, this is not very clear to be honest. Any possibility of an official explanation by Microsoft?

Windows updates are never forced, unless maybe as Tochjo said when you don't have admin rights on your account. It can be checked by default, but you can always uncheck it and hide the update so it doesn't bother you again.

Luckily i have windows updates disabled for years, so i wont install the shitty msn 2011.
I still see alot of people with nicknames, and some of them have this new msn installed, so i dont understand also.
Not being able to block people and talk offline is just incredible stupid. If they force me to change in some other way, i will use other clients like pidgin, heard is quite good.

Crap... so it seems the names DO change in 2011. A friend of mine told me my name is the real one... except my last name is first.. wtf. Also, i see him still with the old nick, but he told me it also displays hes live profile.. so what i see in my msn is all lies.

also why is my last name frist when in windows live profile is in correctly order?

hello guys ! i m new in the forum !I don't speak good english so i m sorry about any wrong...
today i instal the new messenger... the only thing i have to say is : " I want back my old wlm "
i lost all the sounds that i have with msn plus(and i can't waiting for a new version),i don't want my real name but only my nickname(everybody know me with the nick),i want to be able to accept messages when i m offline !
plz ! i need help to remove it and get back the old wlm !!(of course i don't want to lose anything like smiles,friends and anything that i have now !)
