I have been unable to download to the new version of messenger 2011
have given up on that

i currently have
Windows Live Messenger 2009 (version 14.0) with plus
and today im getting the popup new version availble ..yes or no click
to upgrade..
i click no and i cant sign in at all

i know once before i had to disable the popup but i cannot remember where i found my answer

can someone help me sign in?

Hey Diane,

Please take note that the new version that you are offered is not Messenger 2011, but rather just a minor update to Messenger 2009.
Get more information in the Windows team blog.  On January 17, Piero Sierra noted:

i did try to download it.. and it doesnt work for me as well
i get message:
A network error occured while attempting to read from the file
c:/windows/installer/messanger.msi

error message 0x80070643



and takes me back to the messenger sign in pop up and no changes have taken place.

i know last time this popup came up i used
"Messenger Link Reviver" from Jonathan Kays website
and work fine till today
when i try to download his link again shows i cannot access it as it is being used by another process
and i dont know how to get around this..i have asked on his blog as well.
As i see other people have posted on his blog today

You should exit Messenger and use Task Manager to quit msnmsgr.exe and wlcomm.exe.

i did try that .. but still got same message..im stumped..

I'm having exactly the same problem as Diane, can't update & can't get on windows Live. I've tried everything that's been suggested, disabled zone alarm etc. I did notice the path where the problem exists apparently, was C:\WINDOWS\Installer\Messenger.msi,   when I tried to find that path in explorer, it didn't exist! (all hidden & system files are visible) I even installed some upate to system files from microsoft site, but that didn't help either. (sorry can't remember its name, was a week ago)
This is driving me crazy!

Further to that file path... I looked again & there were two folders, MSN Messenger 8.1.0178 and MSN Messenger 8.0......
Anyway I went to control panel & deleted messenger 8.0 from the windows programs in Add/Remove programs, then I deleted that MSN messenger 8.0 folder.
Thing is I have Windows Live 2009 (v 14 something), so not sure if the other folder is applicable either.
In any case I still couldn't update.
I have XP by the way.

Just needed to download a free utility called windows installer cleanup from
http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html
click on the bit where it says download sites, choose a site & it downloads automatically.
Then find it in start-- all programs, run it, then tick anything to with windows live (I also included silverlight)
you have to do each individual program separately I think.
Anyway I did that & when I opened messenger was able to download the update & bobs your uncle.
RESULT!!!

Here is a solution to fix error 80040154 that may work for you. Please let me
know if this was helpful.

Cause: MSXML library may be corrupted and may have to be reinstalled

Step 1. Re-register msxml3.dll

- Click on the Start menu, select Run and type the following:
Regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll

Hopefully, you will see a window popup that says: DllRegisterServer
succeeded in C:\Windows\System32\msxml3.dll is succeeded.

Step 2. Restart your computer and sign into Messenger again

ok..figured that one out..
downloaded a Contacts.msi file and bypassed that

and now did the above.. and it let me upgrade
