Do not depend on the Windows Firewall. It is a 'stateful' firewall that only protects from *incoming, unsolicited* connections. Shut down Messenger. Control Panel --> Display --> Appearance. Apply any default Windows theme. Test. If that doesn't work, try applying a different font instead of Verdana.
