O.P. The file that wouldn't go away...
I wonder if any of you could help me out with this strange problem.
One mp3 in my music directory is very different to the others - the reason being is that you can't delete it, you can't move it, you can't rename it, you can't change it's attributes, you can't even open it, yet it is still there.
I've tried using permanent deletion tools or tools to shred the file for good but it isn't showing up as available in the list.
If you check it's location information, it isn't even there. It's like there's a "ghost" of a file on there that doesn't exist, yet it shows up.
I'm thinking that a cluster of my hard disk is corrupted and that one file is that cluster...
But does anyone else have any ideas about how i would get rid of this file?
Thanks very much.

Start your PC in safe mode, then w/e is holding it open won't launch and you can delete it.

I don't think it's anything holding it open because it can't be opened by anything at all. It's like a "shell" of a file.

if that doesn't work then you need to go to registry and delete a file.........i'll go have a look round to see where it is........

i don't think it's spyware Sikstyles - as they normally apply to exe's and shortcuts. I downloaded this mp3 file myself, mp3s can't contain executable code for spyware and such.
Toddy - how would i go about deleting the file via the registry?

Actually an MP3 can Does the MP3 actually play in any other program? If not then it may be an .exe renamed to .MP3

the mp3 plays in nothing at all and i checked the extension and it was just normal ".mp3" and not ".mp3.exe" - if it was an exe or a file usable in anything then i would've had the option to rename it, delete it, hide it, move it etc.

No, what I mean is that someone could have just renaed it from "virus.exe" to "U2 - vertigo.exe".
How big is it?
