Create a new partition! Yeah! Really. Ought to create one new one before installing windows vista.
WARNING:
due to the software being buggy, I dun recommemd you to upgrade though. It's better to reformat and install vista. If you don't have that many start up programs, you can upgrade, but if you do have lots of them, don't!
Here's my experience, I upgrade my XP to Vista, and cause my PC to overheat due to the many start up programs.
AND Check the RECOMMEMDED system requirements before installing Vista!

Use a hard disk menagement program. A PartitionMagic free trial is available.

Not much. You will need the space to split into the partitions you want to have, but the extra space you need on top of that is negligible.

Yes. As long as the operating system understands the file system of the partition (and somethimes when it dowsn't as well).

Each partition gets it's own drive letter in Windows (except when Windows doesn't understand the file system, in which case you will have to use a special program). For example, your current C:\ will stay as C:\, and the new partition will appear as D:\ (or another letter, because I expect that D is an optical drive).

I think it would be a bad choice to go to vista simply because you're having problems with your current computer. It's not going to make it any better, if anything it will make it worse as the specs needer are higher for Vista.

RE: Vista: Yes or NO?
My mate at school was trying to install it at school today, Vista takes up like 7gbs of space alone, for me that would only leave like 60gb of programs... It's not worth it IMO.
