Hey guys, a friend of mine is having problems with her mouse. Shes been trying to get it to work, but the computer just doesnt seem to read it.

Can anybody suggest anything that she could do to get it to work?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: It's a microsoft mouse btw...

What I will normally do is to unplug the cable of the mouse and plug in again, that'll normally work.
But I won't garrantee you it will last premanently.
Try updating the driver for the mouse too.

If it's newly bought, install the mouse's driver/software provided in the package.

Is it Wireless? I have problems with my wirless mouse sometimes - I'm going back to a good old wired mouse - they much more reliable

Well, has she try to go to microsoft update and try updating it? since the mouse is from microsoft.

Microsoft doesnt give updates for mouse

Edit: Tell him or her to use her keybord(if its working) to get to control panel > Accessibility Options > Mouse and enable Mouse keys. Then use the numpad as a mouse . This all can be done using a kayboard cuz ive just done it atm. Then he or she can to the Device Manager to check her mouse .

As Felu has stated, you wont find mouse drivers among the auto-updates on the update site of Windows.

However, most (standard) drivers are already known by Windows. ALl you need is the original install disk/cd of Windows if asked for.

Thus, her problem is most likely a wrong (or even not installed) driver. So she should go to the hardware settings in the control panel and install a proper mouse driver. This can be quite a guessing-game, so she has to try many drivers. But let her start at the most basic drivers. You also can eliminate a whole bunch of drivers by looking for what connection they are made: PS/2, serial, bus, usb, ... Obviously try only the ones made for the proper connection type.
