is there a way to open the event log window without going into preferences? like the previous version of plus?

Go to the main menu, then to Plus!, then to 'Display Event Viewer' .

hmm i can only open it through preferences. like i use this feature for quick checks then i close it. but now i have to go through preferences and open it

I don't seem to have that option when I click on the Plus icon

That's because your doing the same thing he was at first... instead of using the Plus! icon, use the Plus! drop box in the toolbar.
