Yep, changing the location as you suggested changes the content of the ads and menus after a Logoff + Logon.
As for the other question however, the MSN Today I was hoping to get rid of is not the pop-up window (I had already disabled that) , but the button to the right of the e-mail button , under the status pulldown menu....
