RE: windows update
not much I can suggest (never encountered something like that) but try to restart your computer first... then go to windows' update site for yourself and let it update from there...
If it still doesn't finish, try to manually start the downloaded update for yourself.
KB updates (indicated by KB and a number, eg: KB890047) can be found in a hidden system directory under C:\Windows\$hf_mig$\. Go to the specific subdirectory (eg: C:\Windows\$hf_mig$\KB890047\update) and start the program called update.exe in that directory.
