It actually shows that they want to do things right if you think about it....
Some companies never bother with ANY Beta, then wonder why they get thousands of bug reports afterwards. Google are making sure that all bugs are ironed out, before releasing it as final.
The whole point of a Beta edition, is to test. To see how the software reacts to different systems. (ever had a game where it crashes everytime you do one thing? thats something that should be removed with beta testing...)
Gmail has been in Beta for a long time, and unless they are planning on adding more features soon, it should come out of it soon, IMO (especially as it is web software).
personally i think it is a cheap marketing ploy. You think you are really uberleet because you are using a beta which not everyone has, and if there are any bugs in it, the company can just say "oh, its a beta".
