It's definitely possible using
KVCD [
wikipedia]. I've done it before, and the format is quite popular with movie pirates.
However, your DVD player might not support KVCD, especially if it's an older one.
Using the standard template, you can fit about 120 minutes of video on a CD.
An 80min CD can hold up to 800 MB of VCD video...

A VCD,XVCD,XSVCD or SVCD are burned in mode 2 form 2 instead of ordinary data mode where you fit 650 MB on a 74 min CD. The mode2 form2 has less error correction than data mode.
