Released and captured: Windows Live Messenger 2008
dwergs says:
Like Messers like Tobias, Ignacio and warmth have reported, yesterday's launch of the Windows Live Installer contains the latest release of Windows Live Messenger. Despite the removal of the Beta-tag, the Messenger team explicitly calls it Beta 2. I was unable to spot many differences in build 8.5.1288.816, except for the slightly darker default header color (am I right?) and the Version 2008 label instead of 8.5 in the About window. Jason confirms my first impression:
"While the look and feel is almost the same, we listened to your feedback and fixed many of the top issues reported by our customers. THANK YOU to all of our beta testers who reported issues."
The main difference is that this release is available in 35 languages, in contrast to the mere six of Beta 1. The main annoyance is that it's currently only available through the Windows Live Installer which seems to impose several other (unwanted) applications upon me. Furthermore, Messer evildust reported that the installer doesn't run on Windows Vista x64, can you believe it?
I'll be uploading the standalone installer in the next hour to help the disadvantaged. For the time being, here's a DIY-fix for x64 owners as provided by raghav.
Those suffering from customization fever can already patch Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1288.816 on-the-fly with MessPatch Light (just click the button in the left column), or wait for the ultimate tweaking pleasure as provided by the Mess Patch update later today.
