any emotion that dilates your pupils, can make the iris appear to change color.
also.. there's some debate, but some believe eye color change can be "manipulated"/"caused" by hormonal or neurological changes..
but anyway, from what i have studied and learned... darkening/lightening of eyes is directly linked to blood pressure. the "color of the actual iris DOES NOT CHANGE", it is the blood vessels in the eye that make it appear different in color.

brown eyes usually appear lighter or darker and don't change to blue or green or gray.
