That just means that any messages sent one after the other without interruption won't have a dot, eg:

Contact 1 says:
*hello
what are you up to?
can i come over?

Contact 2 says:
*hey
sure, I'm not doing anything

Contact 1 says:
*okay, cool

Contact 2 says:
*see you soon
xx

skinning is really the only way to completely remove the dot
