ive installed linux on vmware a few times with no problems, not sure about virtual pc but it also should run linux fine :/

VMWare's player has actually been free for a while, you just needed to find the blank OS image to get it up and running.
To be honest with ya, when VPC was owned by Connectix it was alright, and it supported Linux. When MS bought it, all Linux support vanished (although I had it running on it a few times, it was better than VMWare in some respects). So, VMWare > VPC.
