Make sure you are using the latest firmware for it: Here is the
latest update. Although this won't change the speed your drive writes at, it can make it run a little smoother and more efficient, but I doubt you'll notice anything.
However, there is nothing you can do to improve your drive that you have. It will only burn at 1x, 2x, 4x speeds (on CD-Rs), and 2x, 4x (on CD-RWs). That is slow by todays standards. There is no decent hardware alteration to the drive that will
safely make it go faster. I would not recommend you tweak it in any physical way.
Also in this case buying faster disks does not really apply, 4x disks are as fast as he can go.

Don't bother buying 48x disks or setting the burn speed to 48x, your drive can't burn at 48x. You could buy 48x disks, but they are as much use to you as a 4x disk.
