Who says that there aren't that many around, last time I checked there are dozens getting beached every month, there must be a lot, otherwise they would be extinct... I think they're just hiding   .

 Well, obviously those people must know what is the range their camera can reach, the rest is just calculations. It's not that difficult to measure things on camera.
