There wouldn't be hard drive activity when it's clamming up would it?
was put impeccably into words at DebianDay for me last Saturday, by Knut Yrvin of Trolltech - adults try something once, fail, and then are like "ffs this doesn't work". Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.

Sounds like it might be thrashing. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the task manager, and see if there is anything suspicious running. Check your memory usage and see what it's like. Go to control panel - system - advanced - performance options, and if you had heaps of free memory, reduce the size of your page file, if your memory was low, increase it. [might fix it, but YMMV]

Iv done that but cant see anything sus iv increased room ect the help desk said it could b a corrupt file for windows itself and that id have to reinstall it but id prefer not to cause that means i have to put all my music back on it and because i have a slow CD/R it takes too long to put it all back on
