Yeah.... this statement won't start anything at all... no sort of argument in an already volatile thread...

I don't think it really does require any extra knowledge. Sure, if you're completely alien to it, you will need to log into an IRC channel for help once or twice. But remember that once you didn't know how to install programs on Windows, and it's the same story.
andrewdodd13 made a good point about children, and I'll make a similar one. People are told that Windows is easy and everyone uses it. So when something they try doesn't work, they try again or ask for help. People are told that Linux is hard, so when something they try doesn't work, they say 'I'm clearly not knowledgeable enough to do this', and give up. And I feel that this is most of it.
You don't have to be a kernel hacker to use Linux, you usually won't need to know any commands in sh, though it helps. You probably won't need to know what sh is. But it's still going to take some getting used to. Linux is different, not harder.
was put impeccably into words at DebianDay for me last Saturday, by Knut Yrvin of Trolltech - adults try something once, fail, and then are like "ffs this doesn't work". Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.

RE: Which OS is better?
i grew up using linux, and learnt how to use it using guesing and a bit of google. i can see why people are afraid of using linux, as i think some of them would assume that if something doesn't work and just think "oh, it doesn't work, if it was windows it would!, instead of trying to solve it.
they dont realise that there is SO much help for many many things on linux, drivers, alternatives to programs such as gimp oramsn etc, and i think it's better as its a lot easier to upgrade bits and pieces. just do SuSE update once in a while. the best part isits cheap as hell, if not free! and you dont get people wanting to validate your copy of your OS for "marketing", "security" or "research". i can understand why people get windows, its the only thing they've ever seen or heard of, but that's [our] governments fault, they dont teach things that will become important in the future, they only deal with what they think is beneficial now.

RE: Which OS is better?
I am only choosing Windows because I havn't tried Linux and Mac for me is only good for entertainment and nothing else. With Windows I feel better and safer. If you use Linux you would definetly learn more, much more.

RE: Which OS is better?
I went windows but its impossible to tell which is better.
As which is better depends on the person using it.
I like using windows because its simple and easy i guess for me anyway. Everything i do and need to do works prefectly well. but i guess you could do everything i wanted in linux anyway so it doesn't really matter to me
Should be which OS do you prefer. i work windows for home pc and my laptop and my work pc. also in work i have a mac mini. and linux laptop. i have linux dedi server all so.

And mostly for _what_ you're using it....
As such, there is no 'best' at all. They all do some stuff better than others and other stuff worse than the others...
'Troll Poll' I'd say...
Not to mention that such polls and discussions have been posted many times before... And absolutely nothing new has been said in this thread again; it's exactly the same as with all the other threads about this.
