Hi,
You might remember my other thread about my windows, well i've decided its easier for me to reinstall xp because it is going so goddamn slow.

Thing is, it won't let me backup my files, something to do with a pipe error?!

exact error:
Cannot copy ____filename____: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I need to backup my files, copy and paste, drag and drop, and software will not allow it, it will stop after about 20-30 files. Why does it do this :/

I have the XP disk next to me, so i'm ready but im not startin till i have a backup!

If you boot with a linux disk you can view all your windows files and then just copy them? I do that all the time

anyway, you could just get a flash drive and copy whatever you need into there.

Erm, in linux all the files have a locked symbol next to them, so if i back it up using linux wont the CHMOD get coppied over?

No, I mean all files are read-only when i look at them using linux, so if i copy them it will also be read only right?

If it is read only, when you import it back onto windows you can just turn it off.

That Error is a real bastard, try running chkdsk a few times and a good defrag program also a few times

Also I never was able to fully restore files that got affected by this on my grandparents machine, they lost about 20 photos

Yes as its going via Linux and all security crap is binned!
