Generally, you're correct. However, if a game lags in single player then it will of course also lag in multiplayer. The two definitions are quite different, even though to the casual gamer they seem the same.
- Processing Lag: When the computer can't keep up with the amount of processing required to do a frame render. If you get this a lot, it's time to buy a new PC.
- Network Latency Lag: When the connection between the client and server doesn't allow necessary data to be transmitted quickly enough, the client has to wait.
If you can hear the game but not see it, it may be that it's running in a frequency beyond that of the capabilities of your card / monitor. Make sure that your monitor is specified correctly in the display properties.
