I don't see anything wrong You have 0 Unread message. And the "New" message represents the number of new messages you've got since last visit (quite the same as New Posts)
I pressed ctrl+F5 and after that I closed the windows (that also clears my cache (you can set that )) and there are is still 1 new message, and yesterday it went immediate from 1 ==> 0

Refreshing and clearing your cache won't reset your "last visit" time...

) and after reading it the counter stayed on 1 new message, and all 8 messages are read :/
