no they didn't, some people just got their invites in their trashbox instead of their inbox and therefor oversaw it sometimes.

GMail is currently in beta testing. People who currently have GMail randomly get invitations, which they can send to other people. With an invitation, you can register for a GMail account.

Basically, wait until someone sends you an invitation
