no need for new monitor... your 'on-board' video controller (can't even say graphics card) won't be able to support bigger resolutions... every decent machine needs a descent craphics card... these 'on-board' video controllers are just for office computers or temporary solutions for home ones...

my own 17" CRT specification also says the max resolution supported is 1600x1200... eventhough it goes up to 2048x1536 with my radeon 9600pro...

The onboard video controller should support more resolution, even my good old Pentium3 mobo supported more than 1248x1024.

Hmm, check the available modes of your video controller doing this:

Control Panel -> Display -> Settings tab -> Advanced -> Monitor tab -> deactivate 'Hide modes that this monitor cannot display' -> Apply -> Now go to Adapter Tab -> List all modes.

By doing this you'll know if the problem it's your video card or your monitor.

No, monitors aren't made like CPUs - you're not going to get one that can miraculously support a higher resolution than specified, probably even more so with a TFT screen.
