TFT - Tetra Fluoride Theatrics.
Incidentally, this is the same fluoride you get in your toothpaste.
Many people think it means Thin Film Transistor but unfortunately they never bother to check the real name.
Now that you know what it means, it's your job to go out there and educate everyone :)

Where is that dialog box from? I don't know whether valid modes means your GPU can display those resolutions or if it merely means that those resolutions are standard resolutions.

But to answer your question - yes, if you get a monitor which supports a higher resolution then it will work. Most places will tell you the max resolution you can use anyway.

for one thing - don't use a resolution which is supported only at 60 Hz... it's a major eye-killer... refresh rates from 75 Hz (actually 74 Hz but AYK it's unsupported) and up aren't harmful to the human eye, yet I still recommend 85 Hz and up - at these rates the screen colors are much brighter and precise...

RE: screen size
If the native resolution of your monitor is 1024x768 you really really should use that.

Like you already said, a 60 Hz refresh rate will be fine, the only reason to change it would be for movies.

A new CRT monitor will be able to take massive resolutions, and a new TFT monitor may have a higher resolution, check the model you want.

With a 15" monitor, you shouldn't really to go past 1024x768 anyway.

RE: screen size
I would keep the 15" TFT monitor. The 17" CRT isn't that much bigger. A monitor that size I would recomend 1024x768 anyway, and your TFT can handle that.

15" LCD = 38 cm
17" CRT = 39.9 cm

CRTs are smaller than the size they are called.

My Opinion:
15" TFT at 1024 by 768 pixels at 60 Hz refresh rate.
