Brings it right back to the beginning of the loop, as if I'd reformatted it.

And on mine it's the Play and Menu buttons, mine is an older iPod

Have you tried tried formatting the partition in Windows?

Yes. Same thing as if I'd formatted it in Linux.

Ok I would say put it back into Disk Mode and then run the iPod Updater and try and restore the iPod. You said it doesn't install the software correctly you mean after you restore it you still see the Folder with the Exclamation Point?

If I restart the iPod yes, else I just see "Ok to Disconnect"
