RE: Favourite IM
I like MSN Messenger overall. There are alot of useless things (Winks, Nudges, Animated Backgrounds, ect). Yahoo is okay, but has to much spam bots on the network. AIM is okay, not alot of people use it though :p.
I'm on: Twitter, Facebook, and Neowin

Hate to say this, Sean but AIM Has More users than MSN Messenger does, just that those users May not use the AIM Client , if i remember this is why part of the reason why Yahoo an MSN has merged to beat AIM Lead in the IM market

Yahoo and Microsoft will now command upwards of 44 percent of the market, according to research firm Radicati Group, putting new pressure on market leader AOL, which holds around 56 percent market share with AIM and ICQ. And according to recent comScore Media Metrix numbers, MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger together reach 33.5 million unique users each month, more than the 23 million running AIM.

i find file transfers on Skype a nightmare. i use MSN Messenger the most. It has the best features and most of my friends use it. I use Skype mainly coz a family member uses it (although her daughter is trying to convert her to MSN Messenger) and Google Talk (only 1 person uses it that doesn't use MSN Messenger). If it wasn't for these reasons, i would stick with only using MSN Messenger

Yes, AIM may be the most popluar, but as far as i know it is mainly used in America. In most other parts of the world MSN Messenger is used most. (Correct me if i am wrong, this is what i have read, and what i think)

RE: Favourite IM
IRC is indeed "instant" and "messaging", but doesn't belong in this poll. IRC is not an IM client, it is a protocol. It also works totally different than any other IM's; it is totally different in principle. You almost (and I say "almost") are comparing apples with lemons (or how is that expressions again? :p). Both are fruit, but both are very different. All the other IM's are brands/types of apples, IRC isn't.

AIM is more popular because it is much older than Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc. So more users started out on that. This said, a lot of AIM users have converted to other IM's (hence the big market shares today of the other IM's). Also if you look at the demographical spread vs. popularity, you'll indeed see that AIM is more popular in USA, and the other IM's are more popular in Europe (especially MSN). AOL (America OnLine), the maker of AIM so to speak, is very widespread and has a very agressive marketing scheme. Back in the days AOL was also almost the only company that provided internet (and everything related). So all this explains a bit the widepsread use of AIM.
