(look in the options -- i think the port it uses is random when you install it)

You sure your ISP isn't capping BitTorrent traffic? If it is, upgrade to uTorrent 1.5 and enable encryption in the options. See if that helps.
The previous sentence is false. The following sentence is true.

RE: torrents?
i'd recommend using some obscure port number for your bittorrent traffic, ie the month of your birth + the day + some random numbers to make a 5 digit port number and then forwarding that port to your pc through your router.

and it dosnt have to be 5 digits, but there less freqently blocked by isps.

if you wanna test your connection speed you could download a linux iso over bittorrent, ubuntu's dapper drake flight 5 was just released and should be being seeded like mad. you dont need to use it but it may show the speed you can achive.

RE: torrents?
These sites should help:

P2p Forums
Portforward.com - A router specific guide on port forwarding

Personally i use Bitcomet, i have also used the official client, Utorrent and Azureus, i like bitcomet best. You can get bitcomet from download.com
A step by step guide on how to configure bitcomet

Hope that helped
