Duuude, softmod your original - requires no hardware skills (or any skills) whatsoever.
I bought a copy of the MechAssault game from Ebay (made sure it was the right edition by asking the seller for the serial key on the disc) for $8 and a USB to XBOX Controller Port cable (so that you can transfer the saved game file/installer from your PC to XBOX, you can even make your own cable, there's plenty of guides) for $4.
The benefit of being able to watch pretty much every video format out there and without having to burn anything to a disc (you can transfer files across a LAN) is amazing for use as a media centre hooked up to the family TV. Of course you can also play backup copies, although the original xbox didnt have many worth playing (Smilie)

Was definitely worth the $12 investment (Smilie) In fact, even after purchasing a 360 I still use my original XBOX for viewing any video/movie on the TV.

you don't even need to buy the game, a hotswap is easy enough.....

How do I do that?
A quick Google shows that I have to connect the HDD to a computer running Linux. But after that, what do I do?

Also, will I be able to use xBoxLive after that (not that I have ever used it before, but you know, just in case... :P)?
