O.P. Live Messenger keeps crashing/freezing.
Sorry if the answer to this is obvious or already on the forums, I have looked, but didn't find anything which matched my problem fully...

Using Messenger 8.5.1302.1018 and Plus! 470 and 479.

When I try to log out Messenger gives the "signing out" screen with the spinning Messenger logo and what-not, but it goes no further (should go to log-in screen). Friends have told me that I still appear online but no messages get through to me. I've tried updating to the newest version of Plus! (479) but the freezing at log-out still occurs.

After removing Plus! I no longer had the freezing issue, instead Messenger would just display a 'needs to close' message sometimes when I tried to log out, but not all the time.

Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Uninstall Plus!, uninstall Messenger, reinstall Messenger 8.5 and reinstall Plus! 4.70. Messenger Plus! 4.79 is a beta release.

I've already tried that but I'll give it a go again.

A friend had exactly the same problem : his account was always online even if he signed out.

I advised him to make these tips and it worked. I hope it'll be helpful for you :

  • Close Windows Live Messenger

  • Open "Start" and "Run" and write : %temp%

It will open your temp folder : delete everything in this folder, especially the MessengerCache folder.

  • Delete everything in this folder :
    • For Windows XP :
      C:\Users\[your user]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

    • For Windows Vista :
      C:\Users\[your user]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

Make sure hidden files and folders are displayed ("Tools" menu,  "Folder options..." and tick "Show hidden folders and files").

Of course, I advise to clean your computer with an antivirus (Antivir is free) and Spybot or an other tool in order to make sure you don't have a virus.

A detailed tutorial is available here for french users : Réparer sa connexion MSN

I did what you suggested and cleaned out the temp and application data folders, and ran a couple of scans, they found nothing though. But it appears to be working now. =]

Thank you very much for your help. =]
