Ack, Its me, ive surfaced from the Plugins board (could well be the first time :O!). Here is some info on how to fix messenger connection error 0x81000370. Ive copied this here after the topic came up on irc, just in case the problem recurrs.

As part of Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing initiative, Microsoft is providing a security update to the .NET Messenger Service which will require an update for some MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger users.

If you have not completed the update, you will be unable to login. To complete your update Please Click Here


1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that the time and date are set.

2. If your password information is not saved, verify that you are typing it in with the correct case (uppercase or lowercase).

3. Change your password @ http://memberservicesnet.passport.com/, then try signing in again.

4. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ), it's possible that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access the Internet, especially since you upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programs in your firewall if this is the case.

5. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger -- try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it is disabled).

6. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the Delete Cookies button.

7. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL 3.0' is checked, then click OK.

8. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following: regsvr32 softpub.dll then click OK

Then try again & let me know how this works for you ;)


just because this is related, ill also add some information from CJ Barone. (i know its posted elsewhere, but its hard to find :))

In most cases this error will resolve itself after a few hours or a reboot, but if it doesn't and if it is persistent, then you get such an error because you have restricted internet access due to Firewalls, bad configurations, protection software, anti-virus software, ad-blockers, spyware, viruses, lack of OS updates.... in that case try out the checklist above.

8 (extra note). regsvr32 softpub.dll
That command re-registers the softpub.dll file and allows you to view secured websites. It is usually required after being infected with the Blaster Worm. Usually if you get the 370 error and also can't connect to encrypted pages (like this one) it means a virus has damaged some files.

If re-registering only this file doesn't work, it could be usefull to re-register other DLL's as well when you can't login into MSN or if you can't connect to SSL secured (128-Bit) web sites in Windows XP:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

9 Click Start, then Run, and enter the following: REGEDIT
Now go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger
Delete the keys DAConfigVersion and DomainAuthority. Make sure that you don't use/run registry protectors. Restart your Messenger.

10 Keep your OS updated... Go to Microsofts http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and download the latest updates/patches.

none of them worked for me!

After not been able to sign in for 3 days :( and trying everything on the list is still wouldn't work. But i found this then it worked straight after :D.

1.  Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL" (w/o the quotes).  You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
2.  Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL" (w/o the quotes).  You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
3.  Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL" (w/o the quotes).  You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
4.  Now try the Windows Update site and see if you get the same error.

ok i know its says its for windows update lol, but it did fix that and my messenger worked straight after doing that as well....

er... Why are you guys doing all this Complicated stuff!! Just Continue on singing in and out for like 5 min. Thats what I did and it worked for me :P

Thanks for the idea... I've totaly forgotten about that solution. I've updated point 8 in the list...

Normaly you get this error only if there is something very wrong; You wont get it when you can't sign in due to MSN maintenance or something. If you have this error and after a while it solves itself, then either you did a reinstall or update of something, or there is something realy dodgy going on with your PC... The solutions are there to fix the cause, "just try sign in at a later time" doesn't solve the cause of the problem...
