The locking mechanism is supposed to stop people from accessing your Messenger on a very basic level. If the people who are trying to access Messenger are geeks and they really wanna do so, they could always find a way to do it. It's a bit like a door lock.... You'd be surprised how easy it is to pick locks, but (most) people won't do that. Of course Ctrl+Alt+Del is easier, but you get the idea.
